Title: A Necessary Integration: Engaging Students with Nursing History Grounds Their Understanding of Nursing Ethics

Description: During this webinar, you will explore the inseparability of nursing ethics and nursing history in nursing education curricula. You will examine how engaging students with nursing history enhances students’ understanding of one of six structural relationships in nursing ethics, the ethical relationship between the nurse/nursing profession and society, and the role of the ANA Code of Ethics. You will receive 1) module/lesson topic suggestions that address both nursing history and nursing ethics; 2) learning resources to include primary as well as key secondary historical sources that have informed and shaped nursing ethics over the past century; and 3) sample learning activities to simultaneously engage students with nursing history and ethics. The nursing history and ethics content shared within this webinar aligns with “Domain 9: Professionalism” of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the webinar, the participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the inseparability of nursing ethics and nursing history in nursing education curricula.
2. Summarize the historical foundation of the structural ethical relationship between the nurse/nursing profession and society.
3. Select a nursing history learning activity to integrate into an existing course to enhance students’ understanding of nursing ethics.
