Description: Oral histories serve as a learning resource and tool to engage nursing students in professional identity formation. Through engagement with stories of nurses who have come before them (passive oral history), students strengthen and affirm core nursing values crucial for professional nurse identity. When conducting oral histories (active oral history), students participate in critical thinking and reflective practice thus cultivating their professional nurse identity. During this webinar, you will examine the effectiveness of engaging students in both passive and active oral history for professional identity formation and receive guidance to incorporate oral history as a learning activity in your course.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the difference between active and passive oral history.
- List advantages of engaging students with oral history for professional identity formation.
- Outline student learning outcomes that include self-reflection for a passive oral history learning activity.
- Outline key components of an active oral history that prompts critical thinking to guide creation of instructions for a learning activity.
