Cover Photo: This recently discovered photograph of Florence Nightingale was taken in May 1858 by Nightingale’s neighbor, William Slater, a local chemist (or pharmacist). It shows Nightingale reading in the garden of her family’s home at Embly Park soon after her return from the Crimea. Nightingale’s friendship with Slater began when she ordered a medical kit from him to take with her to the Crimea. The photograph is now in the collection of the Nightingale Museum in London, and has been reproduced with its permission.
